We all know that maintenance is a good idea. But like many good ideas, it takes discipline to follow through, especially if the benefits are not so obvious.
How about an obvious case? The dirty strainer shown in the photo got that way from lack of maintenance, and led to a damaged pump.
This type of maintenance-related failure results from cavitation in the pump. As the strainer becomes clogged, the hydraulic oil is unable to reach the pump effectively. Air bubbles form in the hydraulic oil, and then collapse rapidly as the pressure rises inside the pump. This collapse leads to pitting of the pump, and premature failure. The clogged filter can also permit particles to enter the control valve. If the valve becomes scratched, it will not operate properly.
Help your customers reduce damage and lost time by reminding them to clean the strainer on their winch regularly. It takes just a few minutes. Don't forget the yearly oil change for maximum service life.
Replacing a pump is expensive, and the loss of production may be even more costly. But cleaning the strainer costs almost nothing.
Remember, the strainer is your front line of defense against foreign matter in the winch oil. Keep it clean. Save the winch.
