A Monster Winch for a Monster Machine

The D10R is a massive dozer, and the Allied W12E winch helps keep it working at peak efficiency.

They say that everything is bigger in Texas. Maybe. But there's no doubt that Allied's largest towing winch is helping some Texas coal miners be more productive.

Caterpillar dealer Holt Cat in Longview, Texas recently came to Allied to find a powerful winch they could mount on the Cat D10R dozer. Their customer, a coal mine operator in east Texas, has been steadily upsizing their fleet of dozers to allow them to increase production rates and improve productivity. The customer had used hydraulic winches, but their limited line speed and pulling power made them unsuitable for large dozers.

Fortunately, Allied had just the solution—the W12E towing winch.

The D10R is a heavy tractor, weighing over 145,000 lbs. Its winch needs line pull about equal to the dozer weight, and it needs line speed quick enough to get the line in or out within a couple of minutes. The only winch on the market that delivers that kind of performance is the Allied W12E.

The W12E winch is driven by the dozer's PTO shaft. As a result, nearly 100 percent of the engine's horsepower can be delivered to the winch. The winch delivers a significant portion of the available power to the towing cable. A hydraulic winch, on the other hand, would deliver only a small portion of available power to the cable.

This winch installation uses electronic control. This type of control provides the operator with a more precise control over line position. With so much horsepower available at the cable, precise control is critical to minimize shock loads.

To help maintain the balance on the D10R, the winch includes a 1000-lb counterweight.

The coal mine operates around the clock. The operators are able to operate their winch with greater confidence knowing that the winch is sized to meet the demands they make on it, all day and all night.
