Critical Updates to W400 Skidder Winch

Since Allied acquired the W400 winch product from Lufkin last year, we have become aware of several areas that require improvement or re-design. Our engineering and manufacturing teams have been working diligently to bring the former Lufkin winch up to the standards you are accustomed to in other Allied winch products. Here are the most significant issues of concern.

Drum Clutch Support Snap Ring Groove
The groove for the snap ring on the drum clutch support has a tighter fit, to prevent the snap ring from breaking.

Drum Support

The drum support is part of the assembly that includes the heavy springs that apply pressure to the drum clutch assembly. The outer end of the support contains a groove for a snap ring. This snap ring has developed failures in some winches, leading to cracking of the plate covering the springs, and at times even resulting in cracked winch frames.

We have determined that the groove in the support on Lufkin winches was too wide for the snap ring, allowing the snap ring to bend and eventually break. Allied winches are manufactured with the correct dimension.

A replacement support with correct dimensions is available for winches in the field. Order part number R237329. For field replacement where no press is available, we can supply the complete support with springs installed.

Ring & Pinion Gear

At assembly time, Allied is adjusting the pinion gear bearing pre-load in the same way that we use on our dozer winches. This assembly method will provide the correct setting, and lead to a longer life in the bearing.
