Can I Use Motor Oil In My Power-Controlled Winch?

We frequently get calls from our dealers wondering if they could substitute lightweight motor oil for the hydraulic oil we recommend for power controlled winches. The easy answer is NO! The longer answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Even though the winch looks something like a gear box, it is fundamentally a hydraulically operated transmission. It needs hydraulic fluid, not gear oil or motor oil.

The main problem with motor oil is that it is not compatible with the friction material used in the brake and clutches. Using motor oil, the paper on the friction discs will separate from the steel backing, and the winch will fail rapidly.

Long-time winch users may remember that many years ago we used sintered metal friction discs. But we do not recommend motor oil for older winches either, because it reduces the inching capability of the winch.

Play it safe. Keep motor oil far away from your Allied power controlled winch.

Frictions Discs, Pump and Filter
Friction discs like these will fail rapidly if motor oil is used in a power-controlled winch. The filter and pump are other key components of the hydraulic system.
