Mount That Winch Tight

When your winch customer takes delivery of a tractor with winch attached, they expect that winch to stay bolted up. To be sure it stays that way, take these small precautions when mounting the winch.

The most important item of preparation is to remove paint from the mating surfaces on both the tractor and the winch. The paint is applied at the factory to protect the bare metal from rust and corrosion, but must be carefully removed prior to mounting the winch.

It's amazing that a thin layer of paint can cause problems, but it does. As the paint breaks up and eventually works its way out from between the winch and the tractor, the mounting bolts lose their tension and are able to rattle loose due to the normal vibration.

The other key item to watch at mounting time is the use of Loctite on the threads of the mounting bolts. The mounting procedures spell out clearly that Loctite is to be used, but it's up to the mechanic on the job to make sure it actually happens.
