No matter what we do at Allied to build a better winch, we still must recognize that the success of your winch operation is very dependent on the hydraulic oil in that winch. Not just the kind of oil, but also the quantity, quality and temperature of the oil.
Acceptable hydraulic oils are listed in the winch Operating Manual. A typical oil is Exxon Torque Fluid 56 hydraulic oil.
A sufficient quantity of oil is important to provide cooling. Be sure to check the fluid level at the oil level check plug weekly or at every 50 hours of operation.
Oil degrades in quality over time. That's why it needs changing every six months or 1000 hours.
If the winch is running hot, this is a sure sign of trouble. Overheating the oil will cause it to fail, and damage to the clutches is sure to follow. During heavy winch usage, check the outside temperature of the winch housing carefully by touch. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to keep using. The solution to the problem could be as simple as a plugged suction strainer or filter. Check these obvious areas before taking drastic action.
A great winch deserves the best oil you can give it.
