Do you have a dozer without a PTO, yet still need a winch? Chances are good that we have just the winch you need. In our previous Winchlines, we featured our H4A hydraulic winch for small dozers. Allied is now offering two new hydraulic winch models, the WH5C and WH6G, for the middle range of dozers without PTO.
The remarkable thing about the new hydraulic winches is that they are designed specifically for crawler tractors. That should not seem surprising, but it’s important. Some have tried to adapt hydraulic winches designed for cranes to mount on a dozer. But the results are less than perfect.
Our solution was just the opposite—we started with a dozer winch and adapted it to hydraulic power. We removed the ring and pinion gear and the powershift clutches, and replaced them with a hydraulic motor that fits inside the winch case. The WH5C is a direct derivative of the W5C PTO-driven winch, while the WH6G is the hydraulic cousin of the W6G PTO-driven winch.
The benefits of using a dozer winch design are obvious, and significant. Here’s where a true dozer winch shows its superiority:

To allow a wide range of performance, the WH5C and WH6G winches feature 2-speed motors. The speed selection is done by the operator, to select the better operating range for the load. The line speed can be easily controlled to 0.5 feet/minute, literally a snail’s pace.
The first application is on John Deere’s new generation of large dozers, the 750J and 850J. Their predecessors, the 750C and 850C, were outfitted with the Allied W5C and W6G towing winches. But the new J Series has no provision for PTO shaft. Instead, John Deere has provided a high-flow auxiliary pump and handlever as a factory-installed option to power our newest winches, the WH5C and WH6G hydraulic winches.
With the hydraulic pump and handlever already in place, installing the winch is amazingly quick, less than 4 hours. It’s just a matter of bolting the winch to the rear face of the dozer and connecting a few hydraulic lines. Everything is easily accessible through a large panel on the rear of the dozer cab.
The first WH5C winch was tested at the John Deere factory in Dubuque, Iowa, in July 2005. The first dealer shipments began shortly afterward. The main applications thus far have been in the oil patch and for firefighting dozers.
