Freespool allows the user to pull cable off the winch drum by hand. Freespool is standard on the Allied W3C, W5C and W6F winches. Because of the larger cable sizes, freespool is an option on the W8L, and not available on the W12E.
For proper operation, the freespool drag needs to be neither too loose nor too tight. If too loose, the drum will continue to turn after the user stops pulling off the cable, leading to "bird-nesting," a tangled mess of cable on the drum. If too tight, the user won't be able to pull the cable off.
On the W3C, the freespool drag can be adjusted by turning a knob on the right side of the winch. On the W5C, W6F and W8L, the freespool drag is set by releasing a lock nut and turning an adjustment screw. It takes just a minute to set the proper adjustment.
