Allied Systems Company recently released a new Ranger Service Bulletin that clarifies the engine starting procedure for the Cummins engines in Ranger skidders. This procedure is especially important in cold weather conditions.
We recommend you consult Service Bulletin RSB0072, issued October 27, 2000, for the complete details. The following is a brief summary of the procedure.
For ambient temperatures above 60°F (16°C), start the engine without depressing the throttle pedal.
For ambient temperatures below 60°F (16°C), crank the engine and then depress the throttle fully.
For starting with the "cold start kit" (ether start) (recommended at ambient temperatures below 32°F or 0°C), use the following sequence:
The important thing to understand with the cold start kit is that depressing the cold start switch only fills a chamber with a prescribed amount of starting fluid. The act of releasing the switch is what actually injects the fluid into the engine.
Avoid introducing excessive amounts of starting fluid when cranking the engine, because it will cause engine damage.
To prevent damage to the starter, do not engage the starting motor for more than 30 seconds at a time. Wait 2 minutes between each attempt to start the engine.
